Vyasamurthy
Ananthrao Deshpande is one man who has sculpted his way to fame
in the city with utmost resilience. His works of art and sculptures
are one of a kind. His talent saw him shine not just as a professional
sculptor but also as a sculpting academician par excellence as
well. He is the Dean of the Department of Sculpture, Chamarajendra
Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA), Mysore.
He
obtained a diploma in Sculpture at the M.S University, Baroda
in the year 1979. Couple of years later, he decided it was time
for some 'heavy metal' and pursued his Post Diploma in Metal Casting
at the same institution. Since then, it was no looking back. The
man has been devoting his time to sculpture and its related activities
in some way or the other.

He
participated in various camps across the country such as the All
India Sculptors Camp at Garhi Workshop, New Delhi, SAARC Meet,
Bangalore (1986), Portrait Demonstration at the prestigious Salarganj
Museum, Hyderabad, Bhava Shilpa Shibira at Pune and Mysore, Techno
Art Camp at VITM, Bangalore, and several other stone carving,
wood carving, metal casting and ceramic camps. His one man shows
at Bangalore (1982), Madras (1983) and Bombay (1983) stand out
as one of the prime highlights of his brilliant career. He also
proved his mettle at the group shows held at Bangalore Venkatappa
Art Gallery (1982), Hyderabad Triveni art gallery, New Delhi (1984),
Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta (1984), Town hall, Mysore (1984),
Renaissance Art Gallery, Bangalore (1993), and so on.
Statues
of Sri Babu Jagjeevan Ram, Rani Abbakka Devi, Sarvagna, FRP statues
for GRS Fantasy Park, Mysore, FRP statues of Egyptians at Planet
X, Mysore, a 12ft Mermaid & an 18ft Vijayasthamba, and several
other statues for various institutions are among the prominent
works of sculpture that are associated with him.
His
collections are preserved at Rudolf Altivogt, Germany, Central
Lalitkala Academy, New Delhi, Karnataka state Lalitkala Academy,
Bangalore, Ideal fine arts college, Gulbarga, University college
of fine arts, Davangere, Karnataka Shilpa kala Academy Bangalore,
SZCC, Nagpur and Tanjaore, and several other places in India and
abroad.
He
has received many an award for his awe-inspiring display of sculpting
talent. Awards were showered onto him by Gujarat state Lalitkala
Academy (1979), Karnataka state Lalitkala Academy (1981 &1983),
All India Fine Arts & craft society New Delhi (1979 &1980),
Mysore Dasara Exhibition (1985), Karnataka Shilpakala Academy,
Bangalore (2000) and AIFACS New Delhi (2000).
