It's
all about mind games, isn't it? Success, many a time, is decided
by brains rather than brawns. Meet Girish Kaushik, a young chess
wizard from the city, who is not just a promising asset for the
state, but for the country as well. Gifted with impeccable authority
over the chequered board, the 11 year old assumed the dream title
'World Champion' not too long ago when he emerged victorious at
the World Youth U-10 Chess Championship hels at Bataumi, Georgia,
on 18th and 19th of October, 2006.
They
say 'Charity begins at home'. Girish's case was no exception.
That his first encounter with the black and white army game was
at the tender age of 3, courtesy his father Arun V Kaushik, a
professional chess player himself, speaks volumes about the role
played by his genes. Nevertheless, you dare not take away anything
from the boy and his achievements. He stormed into the competetive
arena at the U-7 Karnataka State Chess Championship held at Shimoga
in the year 2004, and struck Gold straightaway.

It
was time for some more glory back home. He won the U-9 Karnataka
State Chess Championship at Mysore in the year 2005. He then extended
his empire to Asian circuit when he was crowned champion at the
U-8 Parsvanath Asian Youth Chess Championship organised by FIDE
at New Delhi in the year 2005 and went on win his maiden National
Level Championship at the National U-9 Chess Championship held
at Solapur, Maharashtra in the year 2006. His undefeated streak
at the National U-11 Chess Championship at Calicut, Kerala, saw
him continue his authority over the National Chess territory in
the following year as well.
Girish
now wanted to conquer Asia again and did it quite comprehensively
at the Asian Youth U-10 Chess Championship held in the year 2007
at Al-Ain, UAE. He carried forward his impeccable form with the
chess board into the Commonwealth Chess Championship held at New
Delhi in December the same year, winning it consequently, thereby
achieving yet another milestone in his ever growing journey of
success. He re-lived the ecstasy of being an Asian champion yet
again at the Asian Youth U-12 Chess Championship, this time at
Tehran, Iran, in the year 2008. Other victories in the same year
include the National Level U-11 Chess Championship at Ahmedabad,
Telegraph National U-11 Chess Championship at Kolkata, and a silver
medal at the Commonwealth Chess Championship at Nagpur.
The
wizkid is now referred to as FIDE Master, a title not many assume
at such a tender age. He now has his sight set firmly on the day
when he will be referred to as the 'Grand Master' which is pretty
much a distinct possibility, the way the guy has went about his
career. However, one saddening aspect is the unfulfilled promise
made by the Government to him regarding monetary aids. Girish
needs sponsorships to see his career take off to greater heights
from here, and it is disheartening to note that he has not recieved
a single pie from the authorities which was promised to him.
